Why one at a time stops working

Search Console's URL Inspection tool is accurate and it is the authoritative answer for any single page. It is also strictly one URL per check.

On a 40-page site that is fine. On a 4,000-page site, checking your index coverage by hand is a week of work that is out of date by the time you finish.

The Pages report gives you totals, which is useful, but totals do not tell you which URLs are missing. A count of 3,100 indexed out of 4,000 raises the only question that matters, and does not answer it.

What to do with the list

Once you have the missing URLs in front of you, they usually sort into four groups.

Pages that should not be indexed anyway. Tag archives, paginated series, filter combinations, thin category pages. Finding these is a genuine result. Add a noindex and stop worrying about them.

Pages blocked by your own configuration. A stray noindex, a robots.txt rule, a canonical pointing somewhere else. Common after a migration and easy to fix once seen.

Pages Google looked at and declined. These show as "Crawled - currently not indexed" in Search Console. A quality signal, not a technical fault. Thin, duplicated, or too close to another page you already have. Why Google is not indexing your pages works through each of these reasons.

Pages Google simply has not got to. "Discovered - currently not indexed". Google knows they exist and has not spent the crawl budget. This is the group that grows fastest on large sites, and the one that responds to being put in front of Google repeatedly.

Closing a gap of any size

If the list is short, work through it in Search Console. Ten to twenty requests a day clears fifty URLs inside a week.

If the list runs to hundreds, that arithmetic stops being tolerable, and it is not durable: next quarter you will be doing it again for a different set of pages.
